Low-voltage electrical apparatus encompasses a vast array of types, functions, and structural designs, serving a wide range of applications and operating on diverse principles. Consequently, there are numerous methods for classifying commonly used low-voltage devices. Based on their function, they can be broadly categorized into power distribution apparatus and control apparatus. Power distribution apparatus is primarily utilized within low-voltage power distribution systems; these devices are required to act precisely and operate reliably in the event of a system fault. Furthermore, under specified conditions, they must possess sufficient dynamic and thermal stability to ensure the apparatus itself remains undamaged. Common examples of power distribution apparatus include knife switches, transfer switches, fuses, and circuit breakers. Control apparatus, conversely, is predominantly employed in electrical drive systems; these devices demand a long service life, compact size, light weight, and rapid, precise, and reliable operation. Common examples of control apparatus include contactors, relays, starters, master control devices, and electromagnets. Generally, control apparatus is utilized within control circuits-characterized by lower voltages and currents-and their electrical contacts typically do not require arc-extinguishing chambers. In contrast, power distribution apparatus is typically utilized within main circuits-characterized by higher voltages and currents-and their electrical contacts necessitate the provision of arc-extinguishing chambers.

 

Driven by technological advancements, the development of modern switching apparatus has evolved in new classificatory directions, primarily encompassing combination, modularization, and intelligentization, as well as the emergence of communicable devices. "Combination" manifests in two forms: functional assembly and integrated functionality. The former involves the assembly of various functional units-such as in a control and protection switching device-while the latter entails the organic integration of two or more distinct devices into a single unit-such as a knife switch-fuse combination device. Modular and intelligent apparatus-such as intelligent circuit breakers and intelligent AC contactors-are endowed with advanced capabilities including fault protection, self-diagnosis, and communication functions. Finally, communicable apparatus establishes connections with computer networks to facilitate remote monitoring and control operations.
